TOO AND ENOUGH

The objectives of the lesson:

  1. Understand the pattern of too... to and enough ... to ...
  2. Understand about the function of too... to and enough ... to ...
  3. Practice retelling a text containing too... to and enough ... to ...

When we are talking about adequacy or sufficiency, we always talking about the use of too and enough. Too and enough is a sign in talking sufficiency. The word too and enough in Indonesian means terlalu dan cukup.

1. Too

“Too ... to” used to shows undesirable excess. It usually has a negative meaning.

Pattern:

S + verb/to be + too + adjective/adverb + to-infinitive

Example:

-          We was nervous to perform well on the stage.

-          He was too busy to talk to everyone

-          The tea was too hot for me to drink

-          It was too cold to go out

-          The task was too difficult to do without help

        Example:

-          We was nervous to perform well on the stage.

Means: he could not perform well on the stage because he was very nervous)

-          He was too busy to talk to everyone

Means: he was so budy that he could not talk

-          The tea was too hot for me to drink

Means: the tea was so ot that he could not drink it

-          It was too cold to go out

Means: it was so cold that we didn’t go out

-          The task was too difficult to do without help

Means: the task was so difficult that I can’t do without help.

Note:

  1. Too doesn’t always mean very
  2. In an formal style, however, too is often used instead of very 

2. Enough

“Enough to ...” used to shows sufficiency. It has a positive meaning.

Pattern:

S + verb/to be + adjective/adverb/noun + enough + to-infinitive

Example:

-          The man is strong enough to bring all the plates at once

-          Maya wasn’t smart enough to understand Mathematics

-          I am not rich enough to go abroad

-          He was foolish enough to talk with animal

Note: “Enough” comes after the adjective or adverb it modifies

Example: My mother is old enough to work anymore. (not my mother is enough old to work anymore

Conclussion:

Too and enough can modify both nouns, adjectives, and adverbs.

Too indicates that there is too much of quality, or too much or too many of some object.

Enough means that there is no need for more of a quality or object.
